Before You Begin Checklist
Prepare your project for a complete and compliant submission.
Before starting your entry, take a moment to confirm that your materials meet all
Illumination Awards requirements. Projects that don’t comply with these rules may be
disqualified.
Submission Essentials
- Project Summary (up to 300 words)
- Include your design approach, challenges, and the Impact Statement — describing how your project positively serves or influences its community.
- (Tip: Address relevant items from your category’s score sheet — such as energy performance, controls, budget constraints, or innovation.)
- Up to 10 Images Total
- Photos, sketches, or renderings in JPEG format (minimum 1024×768)
- Multiple photos on one slide are allowed, but each image counts toward your 10-image limit.
- Include concise image captions (up to 25 words each) describing what the judges are seeing.
- Avoid fill light, flash, or digital editing that alters the appearance of the project.
- File names must not include designer or firm names.
- Optional Video (maximum 1 minute)
- Format: .mov, .m4v, or .mp4 only.
- No narration, sound, text, or logos.
- Still-image slideshows do not qualify as video submissions.
- If using digital renderings, identify them clearly and pair with footage of the actual installed project.
- Watch for flicker — it can distract judges and reduce your score.
Important Reminders
- Projects must have been completed within 24 months prior to January 1, 2026.
- Do not include any identifying names or brands (designer, design firm, manufacturer) in text, images, or video.
- Proper names of places or clients (e.g., Waldorf Astoria, Target, or City of Chicago) are allowed.
- Changes cannot be made after final submission and payment.
- Save a PDF copy of your submission for your records before finalizing.
